Danville Regional Foundation Calls for Nominations for its Annual, $50,000 B.R. Ashby, M.D. Award

July 6, 2010 - The Danville Regional Foundation (DRF) is now accepting nominations from the public for its annual B.R. Ashby, M.D. Award for Outstanding Community Service to recognize a nonprofit organization in the City of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Va., and Caswell County, N.C. that demonstrates a commitment to caring and generosity of spirit. Nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m., Monday, August 16, and can be completed online, by fax to 434-799-2162, by email to smckenzie@danvilleregionalfoundation.org, or by U.S. mail to the Danville Regional Foundation, 103 South Main Street, Danville, VA 24541. Nominations will not be accepted by paid staff member of the nominated organizations. Board members, volunteers, and citizens are eligible to make nominations.

The $50,000 general operating grant award honors a nonprofit entity for its success in helping needy families and individuals overcome significant challenges. The award was established in 2009 to recognize the exemplary service and selfless leadership of B.R. Ashby, M. D., a founding Board Member and first Chairman of DRF. Caswell County Parish, Inc. - a private, non-profit organization providing emergency assistance to families and individuals - received the 2010 award. The Parish served 1,804 households by giving clothing to 242 people, proving emergency food to 2,620 adults and 1,416 children. The Parish also operates the Tog Shop and sells donated goods.

To be eligible for the award the nonprofit organization must meet the following criteria:

- Be at least five years old
- Be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(c) (3) organization
- Be located, serve a majority of its clients, and offer programs in DRF's service area of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Va., and Caswell County, N.C.
- Grantees currently funded or having a commitment to receive funding by DRF at $200,000+ annually will
not be eligible for the B.R. Ashby, M.D. Award
- Previous Ashby Award recipients are not eligible to receive the award again until after five years.

Nominated organizations that meet the award criteria will be invited to submit a full application. The award ? which is overseen by an Advisory Committee of five community members and a DRF Board representative ? will be announced and presented by the DRF Board of Directors at a special event to be held this winter.
