Nationally Recognized Duke Nonprofit Management Program
Offers Local Courses
The Danville Regional Foundation and the Harvest Foundation partner to provide
Training to regional nonprofits at reduced rate
Danville, VA (May 19, 2010) - The Duke University Nonprofit Management (NPM) Program has been a nationally acclaimed, leading educational resource for the nonprofit community for approximately 20 years. As a service to nonprofit organizations located in the city of Danville, Pittsylvania County and Martinsville-Henry County in Virginia, as well as Caswell County, NC, the Danville Regional Foundation (DRF) and the Harvest Foundation are teaming up to sponsor world-class offerings. These courses typically cost $600. With support from the foundations, nonprofits pay only $35 per class.
"It was an excellent program and I'd recommend it to every nonprofit manager," said Lascelles James, Director of Danville Operations for the Southside Business Technology Center in Danville. "I certainly learned a lot - from 990 tax forms to new trends in the nonprofit arena. The networking was tremendous. The instructors brought both learned and practical experience to the table, and the ability to exchange ideas with peer nonprofits was invaluable."
"I'm responsible for different things as executive director than my previous experience allowed," said Denise Buckner, Executive Director for the Free Clinic of Danville. "This program gave me expert advice and new knowledge about board relations and strategic planning. It also allowed me to build a strong network with peers, instructors and other consultants affiliated with Duke programs."
"The program provides an invaluable opportunity for professional development that would ordinarily be both too costly and time consuming to consider for many local nonprofit agencies," said Barbara Parker, Piedmont Arts Association Director of Programs. "I believe everyone will come away with a better understanding of what it takes to manage effectively and to seek sustainable funding for the important programs we provide in the community. I am grateful to the Harvest Foundation and the Danville Regional Foundation for offering this opportunity 'right here in our own back yard.'"
Registration is required for session participation and will be accessible through the Foundations' websites only. Courses alternate locations between the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, Va., and the New College Institute (NCI) in Martinsville, VA.
